This whiskey gets its name from Nathan “Nearest” Green, the former slave who taught Jack Daniel how to distill whiskey and became his first head distiller when Daniel opened his own distillery after the end of the Civil War. This whiskey comes from an unnamed Tennessee distillery, and proceeds from its sales go to the Nearest Green Foundation, which provides college scholarships for Green’s descendants.
The nose has a hint of maple, along with notes of honey, brown sugar, molasses, muted spices, oak, and old leather. The taste is spicy with a black pepper note on top of honey and maple with a hint of oak in the background. The finish is long with a nice honey sweetness and lingering spices. (June, 2018)
