Producing WhiskyCast has given me the opportunity to taste some really amazing whiskies, and I’m pleased to share my tasting notes with you here. You can search my entire database of tasting notes from this page, and I hope you’ll find it useful.
This is one of the 2013 Master’s Collection single malt whiskies from Woodford Reserve, and proves that the folks in Kentucky can make single malts that hold up well against their competitors from anywhere in the world. This version was matured in used ex-Bourbon barrels similar to those used in Scotland, and that’s why it is referred to as a “Classic Malt” (the “Straight Malt” version used new barrels as required under US law).
The nose is warm and inviting with soft spices, a nice maltiness, and touches of lemon peel, straw, and honey. The taste is tart and spicy with lemon pepper that fades slowly and hints of clove, vanilla, oak, and black tea. The finish lingers well with tart lemon pepper that fades slowly with hints of vanilla and coconut. Very nice! (December, 2013)
