Westland Peat Week 2020 Edition. Image courtesy Westland Distillery. The 2020 edition of Westland’s annual Peat Week single malt comes from a single French Oak puncheon cask that was toasted, but not charred, and is four years old. The nose is ashy and smoky with notes of dried grass, roasted coffee beans, dried herbs, and blueberry jam. The taste is thick, bold, and intense with roasted coffee beans, grilled fruits, a touch of basil, dark chocolate, and a subtle touch of white pepper. Adding water tempers the intensity while opening up a bit of honey sweetness and a slightly herbal character. The finish is long, smoky, and ashy with lingering pepperiness, a baking chocolate bitterness, and a hint of coffee. Very nice. (January, 2020)
