Westland Colere 2020 Release. Image courtesy Westland Distillery. This American single malt is part of Westland’s Outpost Range, and while it has been bottled as of this writing, it will not reach the market until early 2021. Colere (pronounced “kohl-er-ay”) is the range’s expression that plays with different types of barley to experiment with flavor, in this case the Alba strain of six-row barley, and is matured in used barrels to allow the grain’s influence to show through the wood.

The nose is malty and sweet with honey and toasted caramel, subtle spices, and a hint of straw. The taste has spicy notes of cardamom and cinnamon along with a good maltiness and touches of toasted caramel and honey. The long finish has hints of spices and a lingering touch of barley sugar maltiness. (November, 2020)

Note: While this whiskey will not be released until early 2021, the packaging indicates it is a “2020 Commemorative Release.”
