Three Chord Bourbon Twelve Bar Reserve. Image courtesy Steel Bending Spirits. This 12-year-old blend of Bourbons from Kentucky and Tennessee, like the standard Three Chord, has been treated with sound waves during the blending process. While unable to compare the final bottled version to the same blend without the sound treatment, this whiskey has an excellent balance and complexity. The nose is aromatic and sweet with notes of caramel ice cream topping, butterscotch, honey, and a subtle touch of charred oak. The taste is thick, chewy, and spicy with intense cinnamon, ground peppercorns and a hint of clove that last and last, but don’t overpower sweeter notes of caramel and honey underneath. The finish is long with lingering spices, toasted caramel, and a hint of charred oak – but – this is one of the rare whiskies where adding a few drops of water makes the most difference on the finish. It amps up the pepperiness along with a touch of spearmint and makes the finish last even longer. Excellent! (January, 2019)
