The Balvenie's The Week of Peat. Image courtesy The Balvenie. This 14-year-old single malt is part of The Balvenie’s 2019 “Stories” range, and is a followup to previous Peat Week releases created by former distillery manager Ian Millar and Malt Master David Stewart, who came up with the idea in 2002 to start using one week each year to distill peated whisky.

The nose starts off smoky and ashy at first, but calms down to reveal hints of honey, vanilla, and grilled fruits. The taste has a gentle smokiness that gradually becomes more intense with touches of white pepper and allspice while honey and brown sugar add balance in the background. The finish is long and smooth with a kiss of smoke. Excellent! (June, 2019)
