Roknar Minnesota Rye Whiskey. Image courtesy Far North Spirits. Distiller Michael Swanson of Far North Spirits grew the rye for this whiskey on his farm in northern Minnesota near the Canadian border before distilling and maturing it using a combination of ex-Bourbon barrels and ex-Sherry and Cognac finishing casks. The result is a spicy and warm whisky with a good balance of clove, allspice, honey, vanilla, and molasses on the nose. The taste is spicy with clove, allspice, cinnamon, and a hint of ginger balanced by touches of oak, vanilla, honey, and a hint of linseed oil in the background. The finish is short and dry with lingering spices. (July, 2016)
