Paul John Bold. Image courtesy John Distilleries. This Indian single malt is distilled from peated barley imported from Scotland, but is unlike most traditionally peated single malts from Scotland. The nose is smoky and pungent with campfire smoke and a slightly medicinal touch, along with soft spices, vanilla, honey, and a hint of butterscotch. The taste is peppery at first, with a delayed smokiness that builds up gradually. Hints of lemon pepper and mango in the background provide a tart, spicy balance to the smokiness. A few drops of water will add some complexity, and the finish has a lingering lemon pepper note with touches of smoke and anise. (July, 2017)
