This is the “entry-level” bottling in the Mortlach range unveiled by Diageo in 2018, and the nickname comes from the special small still that’s part of the complex – and unique – Mortlach distilling process. The nose has subtle spices along with a hint of fresh berries, toffee, charred oak, and a hint of cedar. The taste has a good balance of spices and sweetness, with brown sugar, raspberry jam, baking chocolate, hints of plums and raisins, and a nice beefy texture. Adding some water will open up the fruitiness while delaying the spiciness. The finish is long, gentle, and slightly astringent with a touch of dried fruits. Excellent! (June, 2019)
