Maker's Mark Private Select. Image courtesy Maker's Mark Distillery. The Maker’s Mark Private Select program allows cask buyers to decide on several types of finishing staves to be used with their specific barrel, making each one slightly different from other Private Select barrels, and this one was picked for Chef Bobby Benjamin’s Butchertown Grocery in Louisville. The nose has notes of honey, vanilla, butterscotch, toffee, and muted spices. The taste is spicy, but still well-balanced as clove, allspice, and a hint of cinnamon are complemented nicely by honey, vanilla, cocoa beans, espresso, and a touch of charred oak. The finish is long with touches of espresso, dark chocolate, and lingering spices. Excellent! (September, 2018)
