MacKinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt

Country: Scotland

Region:

Type: Blended Scotch

Bottler: Whyte & Mackay

ABV: 47.3%

Score: 91 Points

This is the re-creation of what’s become known as “Shackleton’s Whisky” – the Scotch left behind by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s South Pole expedition under a hut in Antarctica for more than a century. Like the original, the re-creation has a healthy portion of malt from the Glen Mhor distillery, which closed in 1983. The nose has a citrusy lemon-lime note, along with touches of green tea with honey, peaches, pears, raspberries, and blueberries. The taste is rich and buttery with a touch of green tea with lemon and honey, and just a touch of cinnamon for balance. The finish lingers nicely with lemon peel and spearmint notes. This would be an excellent whisky in any century!
