This was originally intended for release in 2020, but the pandemic pushed back Lost Lantern’s debut and release schedule. It’s a three-year-old Texas Bourbon distilled at Ironroot Republic from a mash of 85% yellow deny corn, 5% flint corn, 5% purple corn, and 5% rye. The nose has notes of charred oak, caramel, honey, toasted bread, vanilla, and muted spices. Those spices come alive on the palate with a blast of black pepper and chili powder on top of a hint of cherry cola underneath, while touches of mesquite seasoning, honey, and caramel add complexity. Adding water is recommended, and releases fruity touches of apples and peaches while knocking down the spices just a bit. The finish is long and spicy with a nice underlying sweetness. Very nice!
