Producing WhiskyCast has given me the opportunity to taste some really amazing whiskies, and I’m pleased to share my tasting notes with you here. You can search my entire database of tasting notes from this page, and I hope you’ll find it useful.
This 30-year-old is the first in what’s billed as a 15-part series of whiskies honoring Ian Hunter, who owned and managed Laphroaig from 1908 to 1944 and was the last member of the founding Johnston family to do so. It’s matured exclusively in American White Oak casks, and the nose has a gentle smokiness with touches of butterscotch, Manuka honey, baked apples, vanilla beans, and a hint of lemon peel. The taste is peaty, medicinal, and tart with lemon pepper, iodine, heather, grilled pineapple, honey, and a slightly herbal touch in the background. The finish is long with a good balance of peat smoke, citrusy tartness, and hints of iodine and briny wet sand. Outstanding! (February, 2o20)
