Lagavulin 1991 Single Cask. Image courtesy Diageo.522 bottles came from this 25-year-old cask of Lagavulin for one of the distillery’s rare official single cask bottlings, with all of the proceeds from sales going to charities on Islay. The nose is delightfully smoky, but also sweet with notes of peat smoke, heather, caramel, fudge, hints of honey and dark chocolate, and a subtle touch of citrus. The taste is spicy with a good balance of sweetness, as ginger and chili powder notes are complemented by a subtle mintiness, cocoa and dark chocolate, and a nice oakiness with just a whiff of smoke. The finish is long and smooth with a good balance of raspberry jam, hints of smoke and ginger root, and a nice oaky touch. Excellent! (February, 2017)
