Highland Park Valknut. Image courtesy Highland Park/Edrington. This is the second release in Highland Park’s Viking Series following the 2017 release of Valkyrie, and the name comes from the triangular mark said in Viking mythology to be placed on worthy warriors to guarantee their passage to Valhalla. The nose is malty with a gentle heathery peatiness, crème brûlée, hints of fig cookies and toffee, honey, and subtle spices. The taste is peppery with notes of cloves, anise, and that gentle heathery touch of peat smoke that comes out after the initial burst of spices starts to fade. Nice touches of malt and oak balance the smokiness along with a subtle touch of grilled fruits that lasts through the finish. Excellent! (September, 2018)
