George T. Stagg 2018 Edition. Image courtesy Buffalo Trace.Uncut, unfiltered Bourbon, and not for everyone’s taste…but if that’s what you like in a Bourbon, you’re going to love this year’s edition. The nose has notes of burnt popcorn, charred oak, molasses, vanilla, and a touch of honey. The taste starts off buttery at first, and just when you think “where’s the spi…,” BOOM! The classic Stagg spiciness kicks in with black pepper, cinnamon, and allspice notes, and there’s no subtlety here. If you go looking for them, you’ll find touches of burnt popcorn, charred oak, honey, and vanilla cowering in the recesses of your mouth. The spices gradually fade on the finish to a lingering level that allows sweeter notes of honey and caramel to think it’s safe to come back out from their hiding places…until your next sip.
