George T. Stagg 2016 Edition. Image courtesy Buffalo Trace. The 2016 release of flagship whiskey in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection range is one of the best Staggs in recent years. The nose is aromatic and warm with no alcohol burn despite the high proof, and has notes of black cherries, cocoa, vanilla, sawdust, pipe tobacco, and old leather. The taste is mouth-puckeringly dry and intensely spicy with cinnamon candies, chili powder, honey, vanilla, espresso beans, dark chocolate, and a hint of raspberry jam in the background. The finish is long, spicy, and might just make you break out in a sweat. It’s not for everyone, and while it doesn’t need water, you just might want to add a few drops to tame it slightly. Excellent!
