Jim Rutledge of Four Roses never fails to impress with his annual limited edition releases, and the 2013 Limited Edition Single Barrel is another example.
My sample was at 60% ABV, but the strength will vary slightly from bottle to bottle. The nose has a great aroma with cocoa/dark chocolate, honey, a smoky campfire, and hints of baked apples. The taste is rich, thick, and spicy with a strong black pepper note that doesn’t overwhelm the honey and dark chocolate notes underneath. Baked apples and peaches come out as the pepper fades, along with a hint of campfire smoke. The finish lingers with a good balance between fading pepperiness and soft baked fruit notes. Excellent!
