Producing WhiskyCast has given me the opportunity to taste some really amazing whiskies, and I’m pleased to share my tasting notes with you here. You can search my entire database of tasting notes from this page, and I hope you’ll find it useful.
Corn whiskies don’t always get much respect because of a perception that they’re one-dimensional, but Rough & Tumble belies that reputation. It is distilled from 100% Colorado-grown corn, with 15% of the corn in each batch being cold-smoked with hickory wood. After distillation, it’s matured in Deerhammer’s used single malt whisky barrels.
The nose has notes of campfire smoke, a slight nuttiness, and buttered popcorn with hints of honey and butterscotch in the background. The taste is smooth, subtle, and mouth-coating with a nice touch of roasted nuts, campfire smoke, and a subtle pepperiness that develops slowly with touches of roasted corn and honey. The finish is long and slightly tingling with spice while a gentle smokiness adds complexity. Excellent! (September, 2018)
