Croftengea 2008 Single Cask. Image courtesy The Whisky Exchange. This single cask of Loch Lomond’s Croftengea heavily peated single malt was bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange. It comes from a refill American Oak hogshead filled in 2008 and bottled at cask strength just two months short of being 10 years old.

The nose is earthy with peat smoke, peat moss, and garden soil, along with dark chocolate, hints of dried fruits, and what can best be described as hot roofing tar on a summer’s day. The taste has peat smoke and creosote notes balanced by licorice, dark chocolate, and oak tannins. The smoke fades to reveal sweeter notes of chocolate mint leaves and hints of citrus, heather, and soft spices. The finish is long and warming with a good balance of campfire smoke, salted caramel, grilled pineapple, and oak. Excellent! (May, 2018)
