Col. E. H. Taylor Jr. Amaranth Bourbon. Image courtesy Buffalo Trace/Sazerac.This one-time only release from Buffalo Trace used amaranth as the flavoring grain instead of rye in the mashbill, and the “Grain of the Gods” gives this Bottled in Bond whiskey a unique character. There’s a subtle minty aroma on the nose, along with black cherries, chocolate fudge, honey, and vanilla. The taste has a good spiciness balanced by honey, vanilla, cocoa powder, and a hint of butterscotch leading into the finish, which is long with honey, oatmeal, and spearmint touches complementing the butterscotch.
