Box Early Days Batch 002. Image courtesy Box Distillery. This single malt from Sweden’s Box Distillery is made from 67% peated and 33% unpeated malt distilled in August and September of 2011, and was matured in ex-Bourbon casks until its bottling in mid-2016. The peat came from Scotland, and shows in the smoky, phenolic nose with notes of campfire smoke, butterscotch, honey, and a hint of fudge with a nice balance. The taste is smoky and spicy, peaty and phenolic but not overpowering with a good mouthfeel and notes of butterscotch, honey, ginger, and a hint of clove balancing the smokiness well. The finish is long, well-balanced, smoky and sweet with touches of honey and barbecue sauce. Very nice. (August, 2016)
