Blue Spot is one of Ireland’s heritage whiskies, produced originally by Mitchell & Son in Dublin using whiskey from the John Jameson & Sons Distillery matured for at least seven years. This 2020 revival brings back the entire Spot range of Green, Yellow, Red, and Blue for the first time since the 1960’s, and is a 7-year-old cask-strength whiskey matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon, Sherry, and Madeira wine casks – a nod to the Mitchell family’s history as wine merchants known for importing Madeira wine from Portugal. Irish Distillers plans for Blue Spot to be an annual release with the bottling strength to vary from batch to batch, so these notes are for the 2020 debut release bottled at 58.7% ABV..
The nose has a tropical tartness with touches of lime, pineapple, and a hint of banana balanced by subtle spices and nuttiness with a touch of apple pie. The taste is spicy, oaky, and nutty with a very complex balance of baking spices, black pepper, touches of tropical fruits, and a hint of hazelnut. The finish is amazingly long and complex with a nice tropical character. Outstanding! (November, 2020)
