Beinn Dubh “The Black”

This single malt from Scotland’s Speyside Distillery gets its name from the Gaelic translation of “Black Mountain,” and maturation in charred ex-Port wine pipes gives it a dark ruby-red color. The nose has notes of blackberries, dark chocolate, plums, raisins, and a touch of brandy. The taste reminds me of blackberry preserves, along with hints of fudge, plums, raisins, and a hint of licorice that develops slowly. That licorice note lasts through the finish, along with lingering touches of blackberry preserves, plums, and raisins. Overall, a dark, chewy, and complex whisky. (April, 2018)
