E&J Gallo to Acquire Four Roses Bourbon
The family-owned E&J Gallo has agreed to buy the Four Roses distillery and Bourbon brand from Japan’s Kirin Holdings for approximately $764 million, subject to U.S. antitrust approval. Kirin had been seeking to sell the Lawrenceburg, Kentucky-based distillery as part of its push to refocus the company on its health care businesses.
Privately-held Gallo has been expanding into spirits through its Spirits of Gallo division, which includes New Amsterdam vodka and distribution agreements with Whyte & Mackay and other brands. Kirin will receive an extra $50 million if Four Roses exceeds sales targets in the first year following the sale.
In October, the Financial Times reported that Kirin was seeking up to $1 billion for Four Roses, which it bought in 2002 following the breakup of Seagram’s. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, and Gallo plans no change in operations at the distillery, where Brent Elliott is the master distiller.
