India to Cut Scotch Whisky Tariffs

After years of negotiations, India and the United Kingdom have finally reached a free trade agreement that will halve India’s 150% tariff on Scotch Whisky exports immediately. The tariff will fall to 40% by year 10 of the agreement, according to a statement released by the UK’s Department of Business and Trade.
India is already the largest export market for Scotch Whisky by volume, according to data from the Scotch Whisky Association. SWA chief executive Mark Kent praised the deal in a statement:
“The UK-India free trade agreement is a once in a generation deal and a landmark moment for Scotch whisky exports to the world’s largest whisky market. It shows that the UK government is making significant progress towards achieving its growth mission, and the Scotch whisky industry looks forward to working with the UK and Indian governments in the months ahead to implement the deal, which would be a big boost to two major global economies during turbulent times.”
Kent projected exports to India would grow under the agreement by as much as a billion pounds over the next five years. India ranks fifth among trade partners in the value of Scotch Whisky exports, with around £248 million GBP in exports during 2024 – a 13.8% increase from 2023.
