Old Forester’s annual release to celebrate the September 2 birthday of Brown-Forman founder George Garvin Brown comes of age this year with the 21st edition of the Birthday Bourbon. As always, this year’s release comes from a single day’s production…in this case, April 16, 2009, with 119 barrels from that day selected for the 2021 edition. The nose has notes of baked apples, fresh berries, cinnamon, a hint of black pepper, vanilla, and pecan pie. The taste starts out with berries and caramel candy followed by a peppery spiciness with a hint of cinnamon. The finish is long and dry with touches of pepperiness, chocolate, oak, and a slightly herbal character. (July, 2021)
