Spios is the 2018 release in Glenmorangie’s Private Edition series of annual releases. The name comes from the Scots Gaelic word for “spice,” and appropriately, is matured in ex-Rye Whiskey barrels from Kentucky. The nose has notes of black cherries, clove, nutmeg, freshly-cut grass clippings, and herbal touches of thyme and basil. The taste is thick and spicy with clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg spices complemented nicely by a sweet touch of butter cream cake frosting. The finish is long with gently fading spices, a touch of toffee, and a hint of candied orange slices. Excellent! (February, 2013)
