This is the second time Bruichladdich has released a 10-year-old version of Octomore, and it’s distilled from malt peated to 167 parts per million of phenols. The whisky was matured in 50% ex-Bourbon barrels and 50% Grenache Blanc wine casks, and is bottled at cask strength.

The nose reminds me of a peated brandy at first with lots of red grapes, dried flowers, honeysuckle, peach nectar, and a subtle smokiness that’s just a hint of things to come. The taste starts off dry at first, then explodes with flavor starting with citrus notes of lemon zest and mango followed by smoke that rolls in like the fog on Islay. It’s thick without overpowering lighter notes of honeysuckle, oak, and vanilla that create a complex palate that’s constantly changing, and a few drops of water will accentuate the citrus notes. The finish…it just lasts and lasts. This may well be the best Octomore yet! (November, 2016)
