This edition is the first of Octomore’s seventh year, and was matured for five years in ex-Bourbon casks with a phenol content of 208ppm – one of the highest ever for Octomores, let alone Islay whiskies in general. As might be expected, the nose has notes of peat smoke, briny wet sand, lemon zest, ginger, and oak…yet remains remarkably well-balanced despite the extreme peatiness. That same balance continues on the palate, with intense peat and driftwood smoke, barbecue sauce, hints of ginger, lemon zest, grapefruit, and oak. The finish is long and smoky with a subtle citrusy tartness. (March, 2016)
