Tasting Notes
Ben Nevis 1970 Single Blend
Country: Scotland
Region: Highlands
Type: Single Blend
Bottler: Speciality Drinks, Ltd.
ABV: 44.5%
Score: 93 Points
One of the rarest examples of this type of Scotch Whisky around. For a few years, Ben Nevis had both pot stills for single malt and a grain still for producing grain whisky. In 1970, both types of whisky were blended into a single cask and left to mature until 2013, when the cask was bottled by Speciality Drinks, Ltd. The result is a very unique whisky worth seeking out.
The nose is complex with a combination of buttered popcorn, malt, a hint of lemon pepper, honey, vanilla, banana chips, and coconut notes. The taste is equally complex and well-rounded with lemon zest tartness and lemon pepper spiciness balanced by maltiness and a buttery-smooth mouthfeel with touches of banana cream pie, coconut, and vanilla. The finish is long and smooth with nicely fading spices, lemon meringue pie, and hints of banana and vanilla. Excellent! (November, 2014)
