Widow Jane Scarlett Barley Single Malt

Country: USA

Region: New York

Type: Single Malt

Bottler: Distiller

ABV: 50%

Score: 91 Points

This is Widow Jane’s first-ever single malt whiskey and was released to celebrate the Brooklyn distillery’s sixth anniversary in October of 2018. It was distilled in early 2014 from New York State-grown Scarlett barley and first matured in new American Oak 10-gallon barrels for around 18 months, then moved to ex-Bourbon barrels for two years, with one final year in French Oak red wine casks from the nearby Red Hook Winery in Brooklyn.

The nose has notes of red grapes, plums, fresh berries, and hints of oak and barley sugar. The taste starts off with a note of cherry cola followed by allspice and white pepper spices balanced nicely by cooked fruits and oak tannins for a thick, chewy mouthfeel. The finish is long and slightly astringent with subtle spices and a hint of cherry pie. Very nice! (October, 2018)
