Westland Reverie fig. 1. Image courtesy Westland Distillery. This is the first release in a new series of single malts from Seattle’s Westland Distillery, and uses a complex set of three different types of malted barley along with six different types of casks over the 49-month maturation period. The nose is comparatively simple, though, with notes of honey, sandalwood, toasted caramel, and a hint of almonds. The taste is where the complexity shines, with a thick, oily mouthfeel and spicy notes of white pepper, allspice, and ginger balanced nicely by touches of almond oil, honey, caramel, and dried fruits. The finish is very long with spices that last and last, along with touches of almonds and oak. Excellent! (January, 2019)
