Sonoma Rye Whiskey. Photo ©2019, Mark Gillespie/CaskStrength Media. This 100% rye whiskey from California’s Sonoma Distilling Company is distilled from a mashbill of 80% rye and 20% malted rye, and the nose has excellent notes of baking spices, dried fruits, walnuts, vanilla, and a soft oakiness. The taste is thick and spicy with clove, cinnamon, allspice, ground peppercorns, vanilla, caramel, and a touch of walnuts. Water adds a touch of wood varnish, but it’s not off-putting. The finish is long, spicy, and slightly astringent. Nice! (January, 2019)
