Deerhammer Rough & Tumble Corn Whiskey. Image courtesy Deerhammer Distilling.Corn whiskies don’t always get much respect because of a perception that they’re one-dimensional, but Rough & Tumble belies that reputation. It is distilled from 100% Colorado-grown corn, with 15% of the corn in each batch being cold-smoked with hickory wood. After distillation, it’s matured in Deerhammer’s used single malt whisky barrels.

The nose has notes of campfire smoke, a slight nuttiness, and buttered popcorn with hints of honey and butterscotch in the background. The taste is smooth, subtle, and mouth-coating with a nice touch of roasted nuts, campfire smoke, and a subtle pepperiness that develops slowly with touches of roasted corn and honey. The finish is long and slightly tingling with spice while a gentle smokiness adds complexity. Excellent! (September, 2018)
