Wathen’s Single Barrel

Country: USA

Region:

Type: Bourbon

Bottler: Charles Medley Distillery

ABV: 47%

Score: 91 Points

This single barrel Bourbon comes from one of Kentucky’s historic distilling families. The Medleys have been making whiskey for generations, however, there are legitimate questions over which distillery actually produced this whiskey. The Medley distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky, has been closed for some time, and the label lists San Jose, California as the home of the company that bottles Wathen’s.

Regardless, it’s still a whiskey worth exploring. The nose has notes of vanilla, caramel, nutmeg, oak, and dark chocolate. The taste is smooth and spicy with black pepper and  hints of cinnamon and chili powder, along with notes of vanilla and cocoa that come out as the spices fade. The finish is smooth and long with honey and vanilla notes. (September, 2013)
