Image courtesy The New Zealand Whisky Company. This single malt was distilled at the old Willowbank distillery in New Zealand five years before it closed in 1995, and is one of the three whiskies from that era in the New Zealand Whisky Company’s Cask Strength Collection. It was matured in ex-Bourbon casks, and the nose is aromatic and warm with notes of anise, butterscotch, vanilla, chocolate, honey, and hints of caramel and brown sugar. The taste is thick, spicy, and intense with black pepper, cinnamon, and clove notes that fade slowly to reveal touches of honey, vanilla, a hint of grapefruit, lemon zest, and caramel. The finish is medium-length, but mouthwatering with touches of papaya, mango, and grapefruit. (February, 2016)
